InKi's Journal Update and other InKlings

It's a strongly divided issue, and I do not mean politics.
Water-marking.
I recently had a prominent Deviant critique my use of water-marking.

I water mark most every image, keep them from being downloadable (unless it's a tutorial or such)
and keep the viewing size medium, never hug never small.
I find it depressing that people will be put off or think less of my work due to this fact, and it's presumptuous that
anyone would want to claim my art as their own.
But, hey, I stand by this and even on *DryadStudios  ;
I share, I want feedback and joy to my watchers, but I am not sacrificing my work.

Is truly greedy, selfish, and an arrogant assumption? (Or maybe vainly paranoid that anyone would bother to steal your artwork.)
Does it stagnate the appreciation of artwork?

The sharing and distribution of anything online is unstoppable, and it's not a bad thing.

But what is your level tolerance?  How far is too far? What is over kill and what is unprotective of art theft?
What is your level of protecting/monitoring/ paranoia?

Thanks for your time and interest.

I don't watermark my onw works.

For watermarks overall, I'm okay with it, but people do need to use discretion on which works they put them on: they can ruin really dark pieces, like this:

Thanks for that comment. I am tending to agree and find that watermarks work alright most of the time, but some times when the image is centered and that watermark hits it perfectly bullseye, it can detract.

You got it perfectly.

Also, I'm not one to make a big deal out of watermarks. It's up to the artist.

Any d#ck who has a problem with artists such as yourself, or myself, or anyone's self, protecting their images any way they can - be that with watermarks, copyright notices, or by keeping the file size small - is probably an utterly untalented green with envy ego issues ladden sort of Corwin, who has personality problems that ought to be addressed by a professional.

Do not listen to them.

Keep doing what you've always been doing.

Of course your art is worth stealing. If it wasn't, the "prominent Deviant" probably wouldn't have looked at it, let alone remarked on it.

My 2 opinionated cents.

Thanks. :D I know some people find it parochial and greedy, but honestly, I find respectfully cautious. The person went out of their way to ask me why I bother to water mark, and i gladly share my belief.
But if they feel they need to belittle or berate me because of that, Fine. I won't feed trolls and give them a response.

I dont think watermarks are a bad thing unless its a huge honking one right across the middle that takes away from the image itself. I watermark all of the images on my own website, but I dont here, and guess where some of my work got stolen from?

Oh brother. Art stolen from your site, watermark included? My sis and I know costumers who have had photos of work stolen, and people trying to pass it off as 'Look! I sewed this!'
:o It's still spooky how much water marked arted is posted in other places with people clearly not thinking twice about a gigantic watermark, usually of the artists name and sire, right on top of everything.

Wanna know the weirdest/worse part? The picture stolen from me was one only showing my leg/heels. It was posted on myspace by one person repeatedly, and I contacted myspace about having it taken down, and they want ME to prove I am who I say. By law they have to take it down, no questions asked, because I am the legal copyright owner.

Me too. I have several photography sites I upload to, and it's as much a fear one day I'll notice something stolen. I don't want to loose control, even if it's already a huge juggling act.
